Surface Quality Is Not a Cosmetic Issue

When a fitness equipment manufacturer rejects a batch of steel tubes, the most common reason isn't dimensional — it's surface quality. A tube that looks acceptable under warehouse fluorescent lighting will reveal every scratch, every scale patch, and every rust spot the moment powder coating is applied. The coating is thin (60–80μm) — it doesn't hide defects, it amplifies them.

Three Surface Conditions

1. As-Rolled (Black / Mill Finish)

Hot-rolled steel tube has mill scale on its surface — an iron oxide layer formed during rolling and cooling.

· Hard and brittle

· Different color from the base metal

· Poor coating adhesion

· Root cause of coating failure

Verdict: Not suitable for direct powder coating. Mill scale will cause the coating to peel off in sheets.

2. Pickled

Pickling immerses the tube in dilute acid (usually hydrochloric acid) to dissolve the mill scale:

· Clean bare steel surface

· Uniform color (silver-grey)

· Excellent coating adhesion

· Surface roughness Ra 1.6–3.2μm

Verdict: The standard surface for fitness equipment tube. SPHC is pickled by definition. Q235B can be ordered pickled.

3. Cold Drawn

Cold drawn tube has the best surface because the drawing die burnishes the outer surface:

· Smooth (Ra 0.8–1.6μm)

· No mill scale

· Tight dimensional tolerances

· 30–50% higher cost

Verdict: Not needed for most fitness equipment. Only used for precision components like guide rods or linear bearings.
