The fitness equipment industry uses almost 100% welded tube (ERW), not seamless. The reasons are straightforward:

Seamless tube is used in only one scenario: components that must withstand high pressure or require precision sliding fit, such as hydraulic cylinder barrels or guide rods. But these components account for less than 5% of a complete fitness equipment unit.
Fitness equipment manufacturers only need to master two steel grades:
Q235B is a hot-rolled structural steel with yield strength ≥235 MPa. The "B" designation means it's impact-tested at +20°C.

Why must it be Q235B, not Q235A?
Q235A has no impact toughness requirement. A squat rack is loaded and unloaded thousands of times daily — Q235A may crack under dynamic loading. Q235B guarantees impact toughness at +20°C, providing a higher safety margin.
SPHC is a hot-rolled pickled steel sheet. "Pickled" means the mill scale has been removed in an acid bath, leaving a clean surface suitable for bending.

Why can't Q235B be bent?
Q235B is high-hardness, low-ductility. At tight bend radii (<3× tube diameter), the outer wall will crack and the cross-section will deform. SPHC is specifically designed for forming operations — it bends without cracking.
The standard surface treatment for fitness equipment is powder coating. Matte black, matte grey, textured finishes — these coatings are all thin (60–80μm) and cannot hide any surface defects.

Many fitness equipment components need to telescope or sleeve together:

This requires two conditions:

Flat oval tube (also called elliptical tube or oval tube) is a specialized profile increasingly popular in fitness equipment design. It combines the structural strength of round tube with an ergonomic shape that fits the human hand.

Flat oval tube is typically made from Q235B or SPHC round tube, then formed into oval shape through a cold forming process. The tube retains the wall thickness and material properties of the original round tube.

Surface: Same as other fitness tube — pickled or shot-blasted for powder coating. The oval shape can make coating slightly more challenging at the tight-radius ends, so clean surface is especially important.

Mistake 1: Writing only "Q235" without grade
Q235 has four grades: Q235A, Q235B, Q235C, Q235D. The difference is low-temperature impact toughness. Correct practice: Minimum requirement Q235B, guaranteeing +20°C impact toughness.
Mistake 2: Ignoring wall thickness tolerance
Standard ERW wall thickness tolerance is ±10%. A 3.0mm wall may actually be 2.7–3.3mm. For fitness equipment tight-fit connectors, 0.6mm variation means loose fits. Correct practice: Specify ±5% wall thickness tolerance.
Mistake 3: Not specifying straightness
Standard commercial tube allows 2mm/m curvature. A squat rack upright with 2mm/m bend is visible to the naked eye. Correct practice: Specify ≤1mm/m straightness.
Q: Can I use SPHC for everything?
A: You can, but it's unnecessary. SPHC costs 5–8% more than Q235B. Components that don't need bending are more economical in Q235B.
Q: Can fitness equipment use galvanized tube?
